Background of the study
This study investigates the challenges faced by interpreters during Igbo community legal proceedings in Onitsha, where oral traditions and local legal customs are deeply intertwined with the judicial process. Interpreters play a vital role in ensuring that all parties understand legal arguments and decisions, particularly when cases involve local dialects and culturally specific terminologies (Uche, 2023). In community legal settings, the precision of interpretation is critical to upholding justice and ensuring fair hearings. However, challenges such as rapid speech, ambiguous legal terminology, and cultural nuances often hinder accurate interpretation. The study employs qualitative research methods, including courtroom observations, interviews with legal practitioners, and discussions with professional interpreters, to analyze the factors that compromise interpreting accuracy. It examines how these challenges affect legal outcomes and community trust in the judicial process. The research aims to offer recommendations for improving interpreter training and establishing standardized protocols in community legal contexts, thereby enhancing the fairness and efficacy of legal proceedings in Onitsha (Uche, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Interpreting challenges in Igbo community legal proceedings in Onitsha present significant obstacles to fair judicial outcomes. Inaccuracies in interpretation due to rapid speech, legal jargon, and cultural misunderstandings have led to miscommunications that can compromise legal decisions (Uche, 2023). The lack of standardized training for legal interpreters exacerbates these issues, resulting in inconsistent and sometimes erroneous translations during legal proceedings. This study seeks to identify these challenges and assess their impact on the effectiveness of community legal processes, ultimately proposing strategies to improve interpreter performance and safeguard justice.

Objectives of the study:

To investigate the challenges encountered by interpreters in community legal proceedings.

To assess the impact of these challenges on legal outcomes.

To recommend improvements for interpreter training and standardization.

Research questions:

What are the primary interpreting challenges in Igbo community legal proceedings?

How do these challenges affect the fairness of legal outcomes?

What measures can be implemented to improve interpreting accuracy?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it examines interpreting challenges in community legal proceedings, providing insights that are essential for enhancing the accuracy of legal interpretations. The findings will benefit legal practitioners, interpreter training programs, and community leaders by promoting more effective and just legal processes in Onitsha (Uche, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to investigating interpreting challenges in Igbo community legal proceedings in Onitsha, focusing on courtroom observations and interviews with legal interpreters.

Definitions of terms:

Interpreting challenges: Difficulties faced during the translation of spoken language in real time.

Community legal proceedings: Localized judicial processes based on customary law.

Legal terminology: Specialized language used within the legal field.
